The B programming language is a language based on Basic Combined Programming Language or BCPL and a precursor to the C programming language (and subsequent C suite languages) that is so ubiquitous in codebase programming over the past few decades.

The B programming language was developed in the late 1960s and associated with Dennis Ritchie, who is also known as a creator of the C programming language. Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie developed B based on BCPL. The language was designed for machine-independent applications.
After creating B, Richie and company moved to C and C++, with the development of a PDP 11 minicomputer in 1971. The C suite of programming languages remains very popular in computer science today.
