Talk To You Later (TTYL)

The abbreviation TTYL stands for “talk to you later” and is commonly used in Internet chat rooms, in text messaging on mobile devices, or anywhere that digital communications take place. Like many other types of abbreviations, this one was created to keep typing and text messaging short.

As a general form of “goodbye,” “talk to you later” is a fairly long phrase. As new technologies brought limited keypads and touchscreen keyboards to users, people looked for ways to keep messaging short. Early SMS mobile text messaging also charged by the length of the message, so it was another incentive to keep messages short. As a variant of “talk to you soon,” TTYL became a standard for people trying to say goodbye over a digital platform.
