Veeam Backup and Replication v11 Released New Features Download

Anyone who has worked in enterprise data center environments in the past decade with virtualized environments will no doubt be familiar with Veeam Backup & Replication. Veeam is arguably the industry leader in enterprise backup technology and provides one of the most robust and fully-featured platforms of any data protection solution on the market. Veeam is making waves in the industry today with the new flagship Veeam Backup & Replication v11 release. Veeam Backup & Replication v11 contains many great new features to note and capabilities that allow it to take backups of business-critical workloads in your environment to the next level. Let’s look at Veeam Backup and Replication v11 released new features download.

Veeam Backup & Replication v11 Released New Features Download

Veeam Backup & Replication v11 is a landmark release for Veeam. It contains features that have been many years in the making and are set to be a game-changer in the modern world of cybersecurity threats and the need to protect workloads continuously. There are five new major features that are part of the Veeam Backup & Replication v11 release. These are:

  1. Continuous Data Protection (CDP)
  2. Hardened Linux repositories
  3. Amazon S3 Glacier and Azure Archive
  4. Expanded Instant Recovery
  5. Veeam-powered BaaS & DRaaS

Let’s look at an overview of these new features contained in the Veeam Backup & Replication v11 release and see how they will take data protection offered by Veeam to the next level.

1. Continuous Data Protection (CDP)

There are two extremely important terms that define the data protection strategy of organizations. These are the Restore Point Objective (RPO) and the Restore Time Objective (RTO). The Restore Point Objective (RPO) is the term that describes essentially how much data a business is willing or able to lose in a data loss event. If your RPO is set at 1 hour, this means your business is able to lose an hour’s worth of data and still be able to carry on after data is restored. The Restore Time Objective (RTO) is the amount of time your business is able to function, even in a degraded way, without access to lost data. In other words, how long is your business able to wait until access to lost data is restored.

With Veeam Backup & Replication v11, Veeam is introducing Continuous Data Protection (CDP) for near-zero RPO values. This will be a game-changer in protecting business-critical workloads as it will mean that you will have access to essentially all of your critical data with minimal loss. This will allow businesses to recover to the latest state or point in time.

This was a feature that was rumored to be slated for v10. However, this feature did not make the v10 release. The wait is now over for the long-awaited feature in v11.

The new CDP functionality allows RPOs of 15 seconds as demonstrated in the Live demonstration with the Veeam Go-Live event.

2. Hardened Linux Repositories

One if not the most worrisome threats to business-critical data is ransomware. Ransomware is being used in more and more cyberattacks. The reason for this is simple. It is effective. Attackers are finding new and resourceful ways to infiltrate business networks with ransomware.

We often hear about how backups are now targeted by ransomware variants. Attackers know if they can seek out and destroy your only means to recover your data, they have a good chance of an organization paying the ransom demanded.

Windows Servers that host backup storage are some of the most vulnerable. By default, organizations may have backups stored on Windows Servers and shares accessible from a number of Active Directory users, including domain administrators. If an administrator’s workstation is compromised with ransomware, the ransomware assumes all the permissions needed to destroy backups that are now accessible to the ransomware.

New to Veeam Backup & Replication is a feature called hardened Linux repositories. The new hardened Linux repositories take a page off the already existing feature found in Veeam that allows using immutable S3 object storage. The new hardened Linux repositories are immutable. This means the data cannot be overwritten or deleted by a malicious ransomware process.

Immutable, malware hacker-proof Linux repositories

  • Protect your backups from encryption by ransomware and from deletions – accidental or by malicious actors
  • Secure architecture
    • Single-use credentials
    • Persistent data mover under low-privileged user
    • Elliptic curve cryptography support for SSH key pairs
    • SSH access is not required outside of deployment time
    • Certificate-based authentication between components
    • Proven Linux-native WORM capability via Immutable flag
    • No extra costs for the features and functionality included
      • Even in Community Edition

3. Amazon S3 Glacier and Azure Archive

One of the great features of cloud storage is the ability to have loads of available storage that is “cheap and deep.” Amazon’s S3 Glacier storage, as well as Azure archive storage, are referred to as “cold storage” since you can have access to your data within a certain period of time. These provide great options to allow organizations to leverage cloud storage for the purposes of archival storage.

Veeam Backup & Replication v11 contains the ability to make use of S3 Glacier and Azure Archive storage which Veeam notes can be a 20x storage savings to achieve secure lifecycle management of your backup storage.

4. Expanded Instant Recovery

Veeam is the original data protection solution that introduced the concept of instant Recovery.

What is instant recovery? Instant recovery allows for basically a near-zero RTO time to gain access back to your data. It does this by mounting virtual machines directly from your backup storage when you need to recover. This means you are essentially not restoring any data to a different storage datastore. Instead, the data does not move and is simply made accessible directly from the backup repository.

New capabilities in Veeam Backup & Replication v11 include expanded instant recovery features. The new instant recovery provides support for SQL, Oracle, and NAS from the new Veeam release.

5. Veeam-Powered BaaS and DRaaS

More organizations are looking at Backup-as-a-Service and DR-as-a-Service solutions for protecting their data. In addition, this provides a tremendous opportunity for Managed Service Providers (MSPs) to offer data protection solutions to customers. Veeam Backup & Replication v11 continues to provide updated functionality to allow MSPs to offer robust data protection solutions to customers using integrated services powered by Veeam Service Provider Console v5.
