On-Line Transaction Processing (OLTP)

On-line transaction processing (OLTP) refers to computer systems that manage and facilitate transaction-oriented applications, usually involving data entry and retrieval. OLTP frequently uses client/server processing and brokering software involving several companies and/or an entire computer network, which may include several LANs or a WAN.

Web services and service-oriented architecture often have OLTP integrated into them. If an enterprise is dependent upon OLTP, a system stoppage or breakdown can severely impact operations and revenues. Thus, security and reliability become major concerns. Offline maintenance often must be planned and strategically scheduled to minimize negative impacts.
